Lynde Creek Flood Mapping Update

The updated Lynde Creek Flood Mapping was completed in 2024, replacing the 2008 mapping. An update was needed to utilize more accurate data, include significant changes in the watershed and land use, and include estimated future impacts due to climate change.

Flood or 'floodplain' mapping shows the extent of potential flooding across an area for significant storm events and is used to inform development and land use.

Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority retained AECOM to update the floodplain mapping for the Lynde Creek  This 2024 Lynde Creek Flood Mapping Update replaces the original one from 2008. The total drainage area of Lynde Creek is 130 square kilometres and outlets into Lake Ontario. The Lynde Creek watershed is located primarily within the Town of Whitby, but extends into adjacent municipalities including the Township of Scugog, the Township of Uxbridge, the City of Pickering, and the Town of Ajax.

Funding for this study was secured through the Regional Municipality of Durham with matching funding through the National Resources Canada (NRCan) Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP).  Please refer to the maps below for the updated floodlines.

Definitions:

  • 100-year event shows water level predictions for a large storm that has a 1% chance of happening every year

  • Regional event refers to the worst storm ever recorded (Hurricane Hazel for the Lynde Creek).
